Blog Entry #4: Digital Audio

My husband has been a podcaster for a few years (check out Draft the Universe here if you're a total nerd.)  This assignment had me pumped!  I am also an avid podcast listener, and I have used podcasts as part of my lessons for years.  For example, I have a fairy tale research paper that I do with my seniors where I require them to listen to The Myths and Legends Podcast as part of their research.  We learn how to listen to a podcast and how to cite it in a paper.   I also use podcasts in my AP Lang class, as AP Lang is mainly a non-fiction/rhetoric class, and podcasts lend themselves well to the genres I cover.

Here is a list of excellent podcasts that I follow or use in my classroom:

Up First from NPR

This American Life

Consider This

The Hemmingway List

It's Been a Minute

The NPR Politics Podcast

Shmanners

RadioLab

The Daily

Cautionary Tales

Revisionist History

Freakonimics Radio

Citations Needed

Sawbones

Code Switch

Hidden Brain

Every Little Thing

Endless Thread

You're Dead to Me

Invisibilia

Serial

Queens of England Podcast

I follow all of these podcasts on the Podcast Addict app.  I typically consume podcasts when I am doing chores, going on walks, and or driving to work.  I think that's a cool application for using podcasts, students can move around while doing it.

One ideas I came up with while working on my podcast recording is to add a podcasting unit to my Yearbook/Journalism class!  Admittedly, actually producing the yearbook takes up a huge chunk of our Yearbook/Journalism class time.  Podcasting may be a way to add in more journalism in a format that is interesting for my high schoolers.

  1. WOW, that is quite the podcast list! I am writing these down to try at a later date. I am new to this podcast thing and haven't listened for enjoyment yet. Thanks for sharing!

  2. Gloriann,
It is awesome that you are already so familiar with podcasts! For me, taking the time to find relevant ones is the hardest part! It sounds like you have a great method down for using them in your classroom! I haven't thought of the fact that teachers would need to teach students how to listen and use podcasts appropriately. I'm sure just like many other skills once they master it, they are able to use them without as much support from the teacher.

  3. Wow You have an amazing list of podcast. Thank you for sharing! I too enjoy listening to podcast at home while completing chores. I also have an app that will scan and read any book. I often listen to my reading assignments this way.
